Is Direct Mail Still Effective? Why It Matters for Small Businesses

In today’s digital-first world, it’s easy to assume that traditional marketing methods have lost their effectiveness. However, direct mail continues to be a valuable marketing strategy for businesses of all sizes, especially small businesses looking to build brand awareness and connect with local customers. Before exploring why direct mail remains such an effective tool, it’s important to understand the different types of direct mail marketing, the various formats businesses can use, and the mailing and shipping options available. Knowing how these elements work together can help you create campaigns that reach the right audience and deliver meaningful results.

Direct Mail Marketing: 2 Different Methods

There are two different types of direct mail marketing. Solo direct mail marketing is where your business can be the center of attention. With solo direct mail, your business is given the opportunity to have its own ad within the mail service, whether it be a postcard or a flyer. A solo stage, however, does come with a price tag.

If the price tag is something to worry about, another direct mail marketing strategy may be in your favor. Shared direct mail is the other form of direct mail marketing. In this form of mail marketing, businesses can buy into a magazine or coupon pack (like a Valpak) to have a small ad alongside other business. The downside to this cost-effective way of marketing is that you are sharing the spotlight with multiple different businesses and maybe even some competitors within your industry. This will make it difficult for individuals to remember your ad and your business.

The Formats Direct Mail Marketing Can Be

The most traditional direct mail marketing you see with your pile of mail are usually postcards, letters, self mailers, flyers, brochures, or catalogs from businesses in your local area or larger nationwide companies.

Non-traditional direct mail is defined as marketing material distributed via hand delivery methods. A popular non traditional direct mail piece are usually door hangers. When a business chooses to do door hangers as a marketing piece, they are given to the post office with the instructions to hand them out on specific routes or neighborhoods. Door hangers are not hung on doors, they are rather placed in mail boxes. A not so popular form of direct mailing for everyone are dimensional mailers. Dimensional mailers are usually sent by companies and are three-dimensional, designed to showcase the business’s marketing.

What Mail Service Do I Choose for My Marketing Material?

There are three different types of mail services from the United States Postal Service that you can choose from contingent on the wants and needs of your particular marketing material. Here are the three different methods below:

First-Class Mail:

When you choose first-class mail to ship out your marketing collateral, it will approximately take 1-3 days through normal local postage or 5 days in national postage. This method is useful if you are sending a piece that has a time and date that you would like your customers to receive it by. There is no minimum quantity to ship and includes free forwarding and returning services. However, it is the highest rate among all the options.

USPS Marketing Mail:

USPS has an option to mail your pieces via a bulk service, USPS Marketing Mail. This service costs anywhere from 0.60 to 0.40 cents cheaper than first class mail all depending on the weight size of your mail. There is a requirement that you must send at least 200 pieces of mail or it must weigh 50 pounds in total. Each piece must also weigh less than 16 ounces each. There is no forward or return service unless requested, which may result in a fee. You must also have a mailing list of the certain addresses and neighborhoods you want the material sent to that you can provide to the post office. There is a requirement that you need a Business Mailing Permit to participate in the USPS Marketing Mail Service. The mail service typically delivers your mail in 3-10 business days domestically.

Every Door Direct Mailing (EDDM):

Every Door Direct Mailing is a mailing service offered by the United States Postal Service, where you can target specific neighborhoods with your marketing mail pieces to the “local postal customer” that they visit on specific routes. You can send up to 5,000 pieces of mail daily but each piece must weigh 3.3 ounces or less and the minimum quantity that you must send is 200 pieces of mail. There are also specific dimensions that are required to be considered for EDDM postal service. Even though there is no postal permit needed for this service, EDDM Retail does require you to register your business within their system. Every Door Direct Mailing can cost up to 0.26 cents per each piece.

The Benefits of Using Mail as a Marketing Tactic for Your Small Business

Less Competition

Physical mail boxes are far less crowded than your E-mail inbox. Even far less crowded than your customer’s social media feeds. When you choose to ship a mailer, brochure or door hanger straight into the hands of your customers, you heighten the chance of your small business being seen and remembered.

Better Retention

Your piece of mail will not go unnoticed. With the rate people scroll past ads or skip them digitally, your retention increases when you directly interact with your clients via mail service. Not only will it end up directly in their hands, it will sit on their kitchen counter most likely until they decide to go through their mail. They will stare at the mail ad longer than they will stare at the ad they see digitally.

Household Sharing

Direct Mail allows for your marketing to be seen by multiple eyes. When mail sits on counters or even when it is just taken out of the mail box, every set of eyes in the household wants to look at it. This allows people who may not even be in your targeted audience the chance to be able to notice your small business.

Omnichannel Synergy

When designing your mail material, you can put a QR code that links to either your website, socials, or both. This allows for Omnichannel Synergy to happen, upping your mail campaign performance.
